How led lights work

When an electric current passes through the semiconductor material of an LED lamp, electrons move from the negative semiconductor to the positive semiconductor, releasing energy in the process and producing light. This light-emitting process is called electroluminescence and is different from the way traditional incandescent bulbs emit light by heating a filament. Because LEDs do not rely on heat to produce light, they are more energy efficient, have a longer lifespan, and emit light more efficiently.This efficiency and durability of LED lights makes them an increasingly popular choice for modern lighting.


The First LED

The first LED (Light Emitting Diode) was developed in 1962 by Nick Holonyak Jr., a scientist at General Electric. Holonyak's LED emitted red light and was initially used as an indicator light on electronic devices. This invention marked the beginning of a new era in lighting technology, although it would take several decades for LEDs to become widely used for general lighting due to early limitations in brightness and color availability


Early uses of led lights

In the early days, LEDs were primarily used as indicator lights on electronic devices. They were seen on items like calculators, digital watches, and appliances, where they provided simple red or green light signals. Another notable early use was in seven-segment displays, which became popular in digital clocks and pocket calculators. These applications took advantage of LEDs' low power consumption and long lifespan, even though the technology was limited to basic colors and low brightness levels

The invention of blue LEDs was a significant milestone in lighting technology, achieved by the combined efforts of scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura. In the early 1990s, they successfully created blue light-emitting diodes by developing efficient blue light beams from semiconductors. This breakthrough was essential because blue LEDs, when combined with red and green LEDs, allowed for the creation of white LED light, revolutionizing energy-efficient lighting. Their work earned them the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for their contributions to the field
